What began as a one-truck operation in 1927, The DeWitt Companies has transformed into an integrated network of five sister companies that provides relocation, logistics, warehousing and freight forwarding services to businesses, households and military customers all over the world.
With wholly-owned assets in Hawaii, Alaska, Guam and the Mainland, our COD, DOD, GSA, and Corporate customers trust us for easy, affordable, and safe transportation of their goods. Beyond our overseas and domestic relocation services, we provide office and industrial moving (O&I), large installation projects (FF&E) and air and ocean freight services.
The humble beginnings of the DeWitt family started in Pasadena, California, in the late 1920s. Robert DeWitt, who had recently moved with his family from St. Joseph, Missouri, would meet families at the Union Station in downtown Los Angeles who were moving into the area and offer to help truck their belongings to their new homes.
The business was eventually passed along to his young son, Woody, who loved the moving business and quickly expanded by purchasing more trucks and hiring employees. Over time, DeWitt Transfer and Storage, as it was then called, started providing services for local government offices and that eventually led to moving shipments internationally. By the 1950s, Woody had become an influential leader in the moving industry and he helped establish the Household Goods Forwarders Association of America, now called the International Association of Movers (IAM).
Woody’s son, Richard, had grown up in the family business working in the truck yards and warehouses. He even spent a few summers working for other moving companies in Hawaii. Richard found the same passion for international military moving as his father and the two quickly grew that part of the business.
For one month each year, Richard would travel the world visiting military bases and the agents that serviced them. Hawaii and Guam were regular starts to his worldwide trip. So in 1982, Royal Hawaiian Movers opened its doors in Oahu. One year later, the family purchased an existing moving company in Guam, now known as DeWitt Guam.
Expansion continued with the opening of warehouse locations in Maui, Kauai, Kona and Hilo, making Royal Hawaiian Movers the largest transportation and moving company in the state of Hawaii. Approved Freight Forwarders was established in 1991 and Royal Alaskan Movers opened its doors in Anchorage in 2010.
Today, The DeWitt Companies is a fourth-generation family of companies that provides a cross-section of transportation and logistics services, including freight, NOVCC, GSA, NGO, commercial and corporate relocations. As we approach our 100-year anniversary, the same care and passion that started it all still exists and is engrained in everything we do. We work hard to ensure a safe, easy and affordable experience for everyone we serve.
