What our Customers are saying

What to bring, and how to pack, when moving to Alaska

Once you’ve decided to move to Alaska, there are a couple of issues to consider regarding what to move and how to do it.

Furniture, appliances, and fitness equipment

When you’re moving to a new home in the lower 48, it’s common to sometimes leave some of these things behind and purchase new “stuff” for your new home after you move in.

But in Alaska, furniture and appliances often cost more than they do in the lower 48 (as most all of it must be shipped there). So if you were thinking of replacing furniture or equipment, best to do it before you move, in the lower 48, as shipping it yourself along with all your other belongings will likely be more cost-effective.

Packing for the weather and the journey

It’s almost always a long-haul to Alaska from the lower 48 (as you have to go through all of Canada, at a minimum) and, depending on what time of year you’re moving, it can be a cold one, too.

Be sure to wrap your most fragile belongings with extra care (or have us do so for you!). And if you have belongings that may be sensitive to cold (as, for example, leather furniture can often be), ensure that those belongings are wrapped for the weather as well (we can do this for you, too).

Located in the far southeast of Alaska, Ketchikan is often the first stop for travelers reaching Alaska from the lower 48. While it’s fifth in population in Alaska, it’s first in totem poles, having the world’s largest collection of standing totems (a tourist draw like no other!).

Moving to the Bush

Yes, Royal Alaskan Movers can help you move off the grid, and nearly off the map. In Alaska, “the bush” is shorthand for anywhere not reachable by roads or with easy access to Alaska’s ferry system. We can move you both into and out of the bush to or from anywhere else in the world.
