Life and living in Ketchikan
Let’s cut to the chase: Ketchikan is wet. It’s in the middle of a rainforest — The Tongass National Forest, which is approximately 17 million acres — and can get as much as 160 inches of rain in a year. But that’s also why people move there: the rain makes it a lush and captivating place to live.
Note that it’s a temperate place as well: it rarely gets too cold, and it never gets too hot, making it ideal for outdoor recreation, such as hunting and fishing. In fact, with salmon, eagles, whales, bears, and so much more, the wildlife is a huge draw for people moving to Ketchikan.
But it’s not all outdoorsy stuff in Ketchikan: there are many wonderful restaurants, plenty of shops (both boutiques with local goods and curios, and retail storefronts with more standard fare and commodities), as well as a handful of bars, hotels, and more.
And let’s not forget about the totem poles for which Ketchikan is world-renowned! The Totem Heritage Center has more than 30 original totems, many of which date back to the 1800s. Additionally, standing totems may be seen at Saxman Village, Totem Bight State Park, and elsewhere.
